The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is the latest phone that was released on October 16th, 2018. It has a waterdrop notch and a very thin bottom chin. The screen-to-body ratio of the device is 90 percent which means there’s no room for buttons or sensors other than the front-facing cameras. This new release from Huawei will have several different options to choose from such as 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB RAMs with either 64 GB or 128 GB storage space.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro comes in three colors: Emerald Green, Midnight Blue, and Twilight. All three colors are made out of glass so you can expect them to pick up fingerprints easily but they also feature wireless charging capabilities so this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. It also comes with a large battery that will keep you going throughout the day and then some.

The design of the phone is quite simple but not boring by any means. The front houses the 6-inch OLED display, earpiece, selfie camera, and other various sensors such as lighting and proximity sensors. There’s no home button so to navigate through the phone you’ll need to rely on gestures. The phone is also equipped with a Type-C port so no more messing around with adapters, if you have one lying around it will work just fine.

The Mate 40 Pro comes with Triple Leica cameras around the back which consist of a 40 MP (f/1.8) + 20 MP (f/2.2) + 8 MP (f/2.4). It also comes with a 24 MP front-facing camera for all your selfie needs. The feature that makes this phone different from other phones on the market is the fact that it’s capable of 5x optical zoom which isn’t really common in smartphones.

The screen of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro is a 6-inch QHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels. There’s a notch cut out in the top which allows for a pretty good size area to fit all your notifications and important information that you generally need quick access to. Underneath this notch, there are a set of sensors and a front-facing camera.

The left side houses the volume rocker as well as the power/lock button which has a texture to it that makes it quite easy to find without having to fumble around with the phone. On the top, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as an IR blaster which can be used with the phone’s built in remote functionality.

The right side of the device has the SIM card tray that can hold two nano-sim cards inside it at one time. The bottom of the phone has your USB C charging port as well as your speaker grill and microphone. Finally, around back is where you’ll find all three cameras on the phone.


The Huawei Mate 40 Pro comes with a HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor which runs on an octa-core chipset. The overall performance of the Mate 40 Pro has been improved upon when compared to its predecessor, the Mate 10 Pro.

Not only that but it also comes with supercharging wireless capabilities so you’ll be able to juice your phone back up wirelessly by placing even wireless charging enabled devices on the back of it.

Huawei is also touting the super battery management features for this phone which allows you to save battery life when needed by switching between different preset power-saving modes. Finally, if none of these work and your phone is at 5% or less then Huawei’s 40W HUAWEI SuperCharge option will get you back to 100% battery in just over an hour.


The Huawei Mate 40 Pro comes with the company’s own EMUI operating system, version 9.0 which is based on Android Pie. There are some slight changes in how it looks over previous versions but for the most part, everything remains fairly similar to stock Android Pie.

Huawei also has its own version of gesture navigation built into its tweaked version of Android Pie. This works in a very different way from other devices that have implemented gesture navigation such as the iPhone X or Pixel phones which require you to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to go back home. The Mate 40 Pro instead uses a combination of swipes, taps, and holds when navigating through different parts of your phone.

One of the most interesting features that Huawei has implemented into their software and likely one of my favorite parts is how they’ve improved AI functionality. The Mate 40 Pro comes loaded with a ton of different smart settings which will automatically turn on certain aspects such as turning on your location/GPS when you open up Google Maps or having your phone go into silent mode when you put it face down on a table. Another similar situation is having your phone automatically turn off its fingerprint scanner so as to not accidentally unlock the device from inside your pocket or purse which I’ve personally struggled with my Pixel 2 XL doing in the past.


Overall, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro is one of the best big-screen flagship devices that you can buy this year. It takes everything that was great about last year’s Mate 10 Pro and improves upon it with better software, new features, and hardware upgrades such as wireless charging capabilities.
